Which Solo Stove Pizza Oven Should You Choose?

Pizza ovens are quickly becoming one of the hottest additions to a backyard or patio. And it’s all due to the quick set-up, ease of use, and ability to serve piping hot, restaurant-quality pizza at home. Making pizza at home also means there’s so much more room for creativity, allowing you to come up with your signature combination of toppings.

Once you’ve chosen to invest in a pizza oven, you may be deciding between multiple models. Solo Stove offers the original Pi Dual Fuel Pizza Oven and the Pi Prime Pizza Oven. Both are designed to meet a pizza lover’s needs, but each option has some variations. So, which one is best for you? Read on to learn more about each pizza oven.

Cooking With Wood Vs. Gas

One of the primary considerations when choosing the right pizza oven is the fuel source. Pi Dual Fuel allows you to choose between cooking with wood using the wood burner or cooking with propane (with the additional purchase of the gas burner). Pi Dual Fuel offers more flexibility to use multiple fuel sources. However, cooking with wood does have a bit more of a learning curve. It requires more effort, including finding the perfect type and size of wood for burning and knowing how the flame and coal base impact temperature.

Pi Prime is a gas-only pizza oven, which can only be fueled with gas by hooking it up to a propane tank.

Solo Stove Pi Dual Fuel Pizza Oven

Pi Dual Fuel Quick Facts:

Fuel: Wood or gas

Weight: 30.5 pounds

Height: 15.1 inches

Diameter: 20.5 inches

Pizza stone: 13-inch Cordierite stone

Material: Stainless steel

Pi Dual Fuel is our original pizza oven, delivering a wood-fired pizza experience at home.

Small pieces of wood are used to build a fire in the wood burner tray at the back of the oven—the heat from the fire and the oven’s airflow design work to heat the pizza stone. The pizza oven has a stainless steel exterior. It can easily reach an ambient temperature of 850 degrees for optimal cooking of any pizza style. It has a wide opening for simple launching from a pizza peel and has room to cook 12-inch pizzas. Pi Dual Fuel can also cook other wood-fired items such as steaks, seafood, and veggies.

Prefer gas? With Dual Fuel, there is also the option to add on the Gas Burner attachment (sold separately), allowing you the versatility of cooking with propane if preferred.

Solo Stove Pi Prime Pizza Oven

Solo Stove Pi Prime pizza oven makes homemade pizza prep much more approachable. It comes at a lower price point and is user-friendly thanks to its gas-only design. Hook the gas hose to a propane tank, turn the front ignition to light it up, and adjust the dial to the desired temperature.

Pi Prime can easily reach 950 degrees, but the dial on this pizza oven allows more customization with the ability to adjust to a lower flame, which is helpful when cooking other items than just pizza in your oven. It can be placed on any heat-safe surface, and the bottom is kept very cool thanks to the sleek black vented base. Pi Prime also comes with a weather-resistant Pi Shelter cover to protect it from dust, debris, and rain.
